Asus RT-AC1200G+ is Asus’ contender to the extremely competitive mid-range router market. It is a dual band wireless router with wireless AC1200 capability. The router comes with 4 unremovable external antennas. As such, the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz will be having their own antennas. Moving on, the design is rather simple with a matte black look. The footprint of this router is rather small and you will be able to wall mount this router as well. We shall see if this router is able to shine in this extremely competitive market.
Key Features and Specifications:
- 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports
- 1 USB 2.0 port
- Wireless AC1200
- 16MB Flash and 128MB RAM
- Operation mode: Wireless Router, Access Point and Media Bridge ( wireless bridge)
- Features: SmartQoS, Parental Control, Guest Network, USB File Sharing, USB Printer Sharing, VPN client
As this is a mid-range router, I do not expect top of the range specifications. However, the performance of Asus RT-AC1200G+ is rather decent despite being a mid-range router. Mid-range routers are getting better and good routers are getting cheaper. I have no issues getting the full performance of my 100Mbps internet connection with this router. Besides, I do not face any wireless disconnections throughout my testing period as well. The wireless range is decent and you shouldn’t have issues with the range. Both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz perform fine in term of signal strength. I recommend this router for users with 10 or lesser wireless devices at home.
A quick benchmark with iPerf3 displays an actual performance of 300Mbit/s over the 5Ghz band on Wireless-AC, not bad for an RM400 router. I love the fact that this router has separated antennas for different bands.
Asus RT-AC1200G+ Unifi Setup
Asus AC1200G+ is fully compatible with Unifi connection with HyppTV working properly. Setting up the router is really easy with Asus user-friendly initial setup guide which allows you to select the Unifi ISP profile. You can also refer to my setup guide for Asus routers here. For more Unifi compatible routers, you can always refer to my Unifi Router Replacement Guide
The router is fully compatible with Maxis and Time Fibre as well. There’s also USB 3G/4G modem support in case you want to use it with a wireless broadband ISP.
User Interface and Features
Supported Features: SmartQoS, Parental Control, Guest Network, USB File Sharing, USB Printer Sharing, VPN client
Asus RT-AC1200G+ come with Asus’s ASUSWRT firmware. ASUSWRT is consistently rated as the best router firmware in the market. The user interface is simple, powerful and stable. From the homepage, you are able to monitor the status of the router such as the connected clients and USB port status. It comes with a good amount of value added features as well. I like the SmartQoS feature as it is able to prevent users from hogging the bandwidth. The firmware is stable, the bootup time is decent and I do not face any bugs when using the router. Some features such as Asus Adaptive QoS and AiProtection are not present as those require a lot of CPU power and thus, only reserved for the high-end Asus routers. In short, the router comes with a decent amount of features and it is more than enough for normal users. Router firmware is still Asus’ core strength and it is no different on the RT-AC1200G+, it is very far ahead than the competitors.
The router is compatible with Asus Router mobile application as well. You can use the app to monitor the status of your router. Besides, a lot of configurations can be done via the app. You can block users or even configure the wireless guest network via the mobile application. I always recommend it for the owners of Asus routers.
USB Features and Performance
Asus RT-AC1200G+ come with a single USB 2.0 port at the back. You can use the USB port to share your USB drive on your local network. All your devices on your local network will be able to access the files stored on your USB drive. I tested the real world performance of the file sharing and it is around 12MB/s (96Mbit/s) read and 4MB/s (32Mbit/s) write, slightly on the faster side for routers in this range. As this is a mid-range router, AiCloud and Download Master feature is not available.
Besides, you are able to use the USB port to share a printer on the network as well. I am currently using this router as a print server for my Epson USB printer and it is working as intended. I configured it as a media bridge to share the USB printer in another room wirelessly on my network.
Asus RT-AC1200G+ is Asus answer to the mid-range router market. It is a very good all-rounder just like the RT-AC55UHP. At just around RM400, it is relatively affordable and thus, a good replacement to the default router provided by your internet service provider. It ticks all the boxes to qualify as a good router. The firmware is great, performance is decent and it is stable. Setting up this router is rather easy and painless. Asus’ ASUSWRT firmware is the most reliable and stable in the consumer router industry. The features it offers is the best among the routers at this range as well. The performance is decent and although it is unlike an RM1000 router, it is more than adequate for most users. It is definitely able to perform better than the ISP default wireless router. I do not have any issues with the wireless range in a normal home.
In short, the wireless range of the RT-AC1200G+ is decent, the performance is great for today’s internet connection and the features are more than enough for normal users. I recommend this router if you have around 10 internet connected devices at your home.
Hi, I am considering to buy this router as current router provided by unifi has very unstable signal in one of my room. The signal sometime very fast & sometime close to none. My unit is not big, about 900sf, my unifi is 30mps, can this router solve the issue?
It is definitely able to perform in a 900sf area.
Is this router supporting 50M Unifi?
Hi, I bought this router (ASUS RT-AC1200G+) a few months ago and managed to set up for UNIFI connection. However, last week the router suddenly stopped working. I reset the router (by inserting a pin through a small hole at the rear of the router) to enable me to access the router. after setting the as per your guidelines, it does not work anymore. The UNIFI username and password were not recognized though they worked on the TM router. I suspected the router configuration may have changed. I have to resort to TM original router to access the Internet for… Read more »
Do you select the Unifi mode in the ISP selection page when setting up the router?
I am currently using 50mbps unifi and quite a heavy user on a daily basis. i have just purchased this router and it peaks at 50% cpu when i am downloading at max speed. After several hours of usage, i realized that band 2.4ghz is no longer able to go online but the 5ghz is working fine. I tried to switch to 5ghz for download and after several hours, the 5ghz is not able to go online but 2.4ghz is working fine.
is this because the processor overload?
I do not face this issue on a 100Mbps internet connection. It seems like a hardware issue to me. Try disabling unused features such as the USB file sharing Samba.
Can this AC router compatible to TPlink N extender? I plan to get this router for downstairs and use extender for upstairs as I doubt the coverage of this router.
Use power line extender instead of repeater. Either one will work but power line is much more stabler.
what powerline router do you recommend to use with this RT-AC1200g+ router?
Get TP-Link powerline devices.
I’m looking for a wifi router that can cover my whole double storey terrace house (22’x70′). Will this router suit my need?
FYI. My unifi point is at the living room at ground floor.
Should be fine.
Hi I live in a 3000 sqft condo and I have unifi service at 50mbps. However the WiFi coverage is very poor to none in one of my rooms. From your article, I gather I need to replace the wireless router. Looking at the various models would you recommend RT-AC55UHP as the most suitable model? I do not wish to spend too much on this item. Thanks
3000 sqft is huge. I doubt the RT-AC55UHP is sufficient. You will need a powerline wireless extender.
Will a wireless range extender work just as well? And is it true WiFi extenders compromise the Internet speed?
Well, if your property is really big, there’s no way a single router will be able to cover the entire area. A powerful wireless router is subjected to the transmission capability of your devices as well.
hi, my house is double story detached house, and I needs to get wi-fi coverage to all floors. does this router support my needs?
It may not be the best candidate for a house this big.
I am using unifi 30. There are currently 6 users in my premise, around 10 devices connected at the same time. Stock router giving me frequent on and off and very weak signal at first floor. Should I go for AC1200 or AC 55? Both seems OK in your review. What’s their major difference anyway?
The RT-AC55UHP come with more features in the firmware and high gain antenna.
hello, ,my Unifi router have problem will disconnect every 15-20 mnt. so i decide to buy router for replace unifi router. i use 50mb unifi. which is the best router for middle range use but stable. only use for 4-6 device in 1 time. thanks
I recommend this model, it has really good value and suits your needs.
How to setup this router? I bought one from taobao with RT-AC1200GU. The network status keep showing disconnected
I not sure if the Taobao version come with Unifi support. You can try and update it to the latest firmware.
Why from TaoBao when you can get it at any shop in Malaysia? Are you sure they are genuine? Even if it is RM50 cheaper, I rather get it from a shop, if it is a fake, i know who to look for.
Never Taobao. Yes, sometimes you get something good. But after getting bitten by fake, incompatible, faulty or missing Taobao products a couple of times, I found I have not saved a single sen on the whole.
which router would you recommend for 15 internet connected devices?
This router is good enough.
