Tapo H110 Review: Smart IR Hub with Matter Support

If you’re like me and have a ton of remote controls at home, the Tapo H110 is the perfect accessory to unify them all. It can replace nearly every IR remote control, letting you manage them conveniently through the Tapo App on your phone. It even supports Matter, which opens up endless possibilities for automation across different ecosystems.

The Tapo H110 is small and lightweight, about the width of a standard iPhone. Although not listed in the specifications, it also includes a built-in speaker that can be used for alarm alerts. I like the simple design, with only a subtle LED indicator on the top that doesn’t draw attention. Overall, it’s clean and understated.

There are two mounting holes underneath for wall or ceiling installation, but given how light the device is, the included double-sided adhesive works just as well. Power is supplied through a standard USB-C port, though a power adapter is not included in the box. Interestingly, TP-Link provides a USB-A to USB-C cable rather than the more common USB-C to USB-C option.

In terms of connectivity, the Tapo H110 only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and has no wired LAN options. That said, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is perfectly sufficient for this type of device, and I’ve had no conection issues during testing. Bluetooth is required only during the initial setup, after which the device runs solely on Wi-Fi.

Smart IR Remote

Setting up the Tapo H110 as a smart IR remote is straightforward. You simply click any button while pointing your existing remote at the H110 and it will attempt to automatically recognize the appliance type and load the appropriate control profile from Tapo’s extensive library. Once paired, the appliance can be fully controlled through the Tapo App on your phone, eliminating the need to keep track of multiple physical remote controls.

The signal strength of the H110 is impressive, allowing it to reach and control devices placed across my entire living room reliably. The convenience of having all your IR devices consolidated in one app also opens up opportunities for advanced automation, such as linking them to sensors or scheduling actions.

Every IR device linked to the Tapo H110 appears as its own accessory in the Tapo App. This allows for powerful automation possibilities. For example, you can automate your ceiling fan speed using readings from the Tapo T310 smart temperature sensor. The automation is also very reliable and I have yet to encounter any trigger issues while testing the Tapo H110.

IR Learning Mode

While Tapo offers a large library of supported devices, you may still come across an accessory that isn’t listed. In such cases, the IR learning mode becomes especially useful. The Tapo H110 allows you to add virtually any IR remote by simply pointing the original remote at the hub and mapping each button directly within the Tapo App.

The IR learning process is quick and responsive, and you can customize the layout, icons, and names for every button, making it easy to personalize. While almost every IR remote controls are compatible, some air conditioners might require some fine-tuning, as they often use combination or long IR codes that can be quite tricky.

Matter Compatibility

The Tapo H110 is a Matter-certified home hub which can be integrated into Matter-compatible ecosystems such as Apple Home. Once added to Apple Home, you can not only control IR devices but also access data from Tapo sensors and manage Tapo accessories directly within the Apple Home app.

Two key advantages stand out. First, all Tapo sensors connected to the Tapo H110 become visible in Apple Home. Secondly, all your IR-controlled devices that’s linked to the Tapo H110 are also added to Apple Home. The Matter integration between the Tapo H110 and Apple Home is extremely smooth, with actions triggered in Apple Home reflected almost instantly on the H110.

Automation with Tapo Accessories

For those looking to start building a smart home ecosystem, the Tapo H110 offers an affordable entry point. It works seamlessly with Tapo smart sensors and switches, such as the Tapo S220 smart wall switch and Tapo T110 smart contact sensor, enabling broader automation possibilities.

For example, you can pair the H110 with a Tapo contact sensor on your main door and use its built-in speaker as an alarm. Whenever the door is unexpectedly opened, the H110 can trigger a loud alert while also sending a notification to your phone. You can also integrate it with a Tapo smart button to act as a simple doorbell, where pressing the button makes the H110 play a chime sound while sending an alert to your devices.

Closing Thoughts

The Tapo H110 stands out as an affordable and versatile IR hub that brings older appliances into a modern smart home setup. Its compact design, reliable performance, and seamless Matter integration make it easy to recommend for users who want simple automation without investing heavily in expensive systems.
