Reviewed: Asus RT-AC55UHP Wireless Router

Asus RT-AC55UHP is very similar to the RT-AC55U which is not available in Malaysia. It comes with 2 ridiculously huge 9dBi antennas. The HP naming stands for high power. Asus claims it is able to provide a better signal coverage and performance. Besides, the router supports fast Wireless AC1200 which should guarantee you a great wireless transfer speed. It is one of my favourite routers and I always recommend it for people looking for a replacement to their ISP provided router.

The RT-AC55UHP is a really eye catching router with the dual enormous antennas on the back. It comes with 1 USB 3.0 port in front and 1 USB 2.0 port at the back. There is only 1 combined activity indicator for the 4 LAN ports.

Quick Specs:

  • Wireless AC1200 (867+300)
  • 4 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports
  • 128MB RAM 128MB Flash
  • Dual 9dBi antenna

Wireless Signal

Asus RT-AC55UHP Dual Antenna

Asus RT-AC55UHP live up to its claim with the dual high gain antenna. The signal coverage from this router is really good. I am able to use my wireless connection at certain part of my house which I never able to use with the ISP provided router. Please make sure the antenna is properly angled for the best performance. Asus provided an antenna spacer just for that usage.

Wireless Performance

The RT-AC55UHP comes with dual 9dBi antennas which Asus claims to help boost the wireless range of the router. We shall see if the antennas really do help with the range of the router. This router support Wireless AC up to AC1200 which is 867Mbps on 5Ghz and 300Mbps on 2.4Ghz. I am conducting a simple benchmark on my laptop which similarly support Wireless AC1200 as well. I will be using iperf test with my another computer acting as a Server on Gigabit Ethernet.

Asus RT-AC55UHP Wireless Benchmark

On my close distance testing, it is able to hit a real life performance of 255Mbit/s consistently. Wireless throughput speed is 867Mbps from Windows readout. It is reasonable from a router this range.

Asus RT-AC55UHP Benchmark

Here’s the interesting part. As I move into another room, I still able to obtain a very impressive real life performance of 177Mbit/s although the wireless throughput dropped to 526.5Mbps. The dual 9dBi antennas do work as advertised and able to provide a strong signal. If you want something with strong signal strength, this is the router for you.

Overall, the performance of this router is promising. Streaming movie over the wifi is really smooth without dropped frames.

Asus RT-AC55UHP Unifi Compatibility

Asus RT-AC55UHP is fully compatible with Unifi with HyppTV working. In addition, Native IPV6 is working properly. It is definitely much more stable than the stock router provided by TM. You can refer to this article on how to configure Unifi on Asus routers. Sidenote: Maxis Fibre is working properly as well.

User Interface and Features

The RT-AC55UHP comes with AsusWRT. AsusWRT is the firmware used on all new Asus routers and it is really user-friendly and easy to configure. It includes a lot of features such as AiCloud, Download Master, 3G/4G sharing, USB file sharing, VPN client, Smart QoS and etc. You can download torrents, run a private cloud and more. The list of features is the most extensive in compare to its competitors. The value added features are really powerful and it sorts of transform your router into a mini NAS. The full list of features is available on Asus site here. I do hope that it comes with Adaptive QoS which is currently reserved for the more expensive Asus routers.

USB File Sharing

Asus RT-AC55UHP USB Speed Test

Asus RT-AC55UHP comes with 2 USB port which you can use it to share files over your network. On my test with a USB 3.0 external hard disk, it is able to reach a decent 16.8MB/s write and 20.5MB/s read. Besides, you can also have the router to download torrents or set up your personal cloud with the Aicloud feature. The USB port can be used for USB 3G/4G modem and printer sharing as well. It is a very functional router.

The Verdict

Asus RT-AC55UHP Top View

Asus RT-AC55UHP is a really good all-rounder, it is very stable and performs well. The wireless performance is definitely a significant step up over the ISP provided router. Do not worry about getting the full speed of your internet package. AsusWRT comes with a lot of useful and powerful features to compliment the already great hardware. It is worth noting that most wireless devices on the market currently only support up to Wireless AC1200. This router is the perfect candidate as a modern wireless router. Lastly, it is fully compatible with Unifi and HyppTV as well. If you are shopping for a new router, you can’t go wrong with this.

Great write up on the review of the RT-AC55UHP.
I myself is considering either this router or the RT-AC68U.
Since you have both, can you tell me which is better in terms of wifi signal strength and coverage?

Sorry to hijack the comment. I, too, have been eyeing the AC68U and I have a few questions.

My stock TM router is dying on me, so now is a good time to finally replace the old sucker.

A little background, I am a gamer on a wired ethernet connection to my router and my family streams extensively for their entertainment needs through WIFI.

Will getting the AC68U help with my wired connection? I am sure the router will help with my family WIFI needs though.

Hi Blacktubi

May i know this model work on Maxis fiber VoIP?

Hi Blacktubi,

Recently installed unifi 30mb & given archer c5v2, getting 4 bar wifi at the weakest spot in my 2 storey house, but the line keeps dropping… is this router significantly more stable in your opinion?

Thanks for all your reviews, love them!

Bought it, surprisingly, in the same location, it’s only giving me an average of 13mbps while the archer c5(with 9dbi antenna) give me about 72mbps…

Hi Blacktubi,

I have just upgraded from N12 to AC55UHP with upgraded 30mbps line as well. I bought the router mainly because needed multiple streaming support over N12. I notice the speed I use on the 2.4GHz are faster than in 5GHz. The modem and router are kept inside my store room. I can never get the 5GHz signal at all at the 2nd floor. Is it a waste for my side not be able to use the 5GHz even I have the AC router?

Hi Blacktubi,

I have an issue while setting up my RT-AC55UHP . it said “The System time has not beend sychronized with an NTP server” i cant connect with my unifi.. since the NTP server link is incorrect how do i fix it?

I need a very good router, considering RT-N18U as I do not need to use WIFI.

I will use another AP for wifi purpose

do u suggest I should I get a better one ie. 68U or 87U

I don’t mind the price

hi, just to check with you.
can i upgrade the firmware to latest one on asus website?
will i be able to use for unifi after update firmware?

hi sir , i recently get my unifi 30mpbs , receive a dlink dir 850l router from router . but im facing a problem that my wifi connection is not good when im at living room at ground floor. my router is located at my bedroom at 1st floor the last room. im staying at a semi-d house(2 story) . so ,im planning to get a asus rt-ac55uhp router. will my wifi connection be better? thx u sir for advice ,have a nice day sir. sorry for my bad english, thank you once again.

Hi Blacktubi,

I’ve just subscribed to unifi 30mbps. Think of getting either Asus RT-AC55UHP or RT-N18U. Comparing both, which do you think will give better wifi coverage at higher speed when connecting via multiple devices in a double storey house.

Thank you.

My RT-AC55uhp modem all the led lights are blinking. I cant connect to the internet, even the page.
My unifi connectionn is ok. Modem not working, can help?
Have tried to press the reset button, still cannot. All lights are blinking. Izit a hardware problem. I juz use for 2 weeks only.

Greetings BlackTubi,
I am planning to upgrade my N12 router and am looking at RT-AC55UHP but I do not mind getting the RT-AC68U.
Will the AC55 be good enough or should i go for AC68 (Just to make sure)
On a one to one comparison, what is the significant advantage in AC68 compared to AC55
My concern is coverage. I live in a double storey house.
The CPU in AC55UHP is it dual or single core?

I enjoyed your write up, simple and straight. Keep it up and thank you.

“Besides, you can also have the router to download torrents or set up your personal cloud with the Aicloud feature”

Have you tried it ? “Download Master”

I tried it and it opened a can of worms!
It’s better not to highlight it as a feature as this is very far from working on AC55UHP
